Took the 50 from Ely through Eureka on the way to Elko. Hoped to go through the Ruby Lake Wildlife refuge but alas it was 25 miles of dirt road. So I went through Eureka. A weird spot. Blink and you miss it. And yet I found a glitzy deserted storefront on main street which stuck out like a sore thumb in this dusty out of the way town. I've noticed that storefront casino before on previous stops in Eureka. I guess Eureka exists as a gas spot considering I've stopped here four or five times in my life just for gas. That casino was someone’s harebrained scheme. What a terrible idea, but I love them for it. I love abandoned places. I expect there will be many more abandoned places in the future and I expect they will be decidedly more menacing. Not that they won’t continue to be explored.
Had a gigantic mediocre Basque meal in Elko. Wandered Elko near shuttered casinos and open ones too. Saw great paintings of gunfighters and western icons in a shitty smoke filled casino and did my best to photograph every one of them. Stayed at the Thunderbird Motel. Ate more chocolate, drank more beer. No wonder my guts hate me.
